England experienced its hottest June on record in 2026, according to new provisional data released by the Met Office. This unprecedented heat was primarily driven by a searing heatwave that gripped the nation in the final days of the month, triggering red heat alerts for three consecutive days – a first for England. While England bore the brunt, Wales and the UK as a whole also recorded their second-warmest June since 1884.
This isn't an isolated incident; Dr. Emily Carlisle, a Met Office scientist, highlighted that June's extreme temperatures are part of a wider trend. She noted that five out of the first six months of 2026 saw mean temperatures at least 1C above average, with only January dipping below. This pattern follows what was already the warmest spring on record for England and Wales, and the third-warmest for the UK.
A particularly striking figure was recorded at Kew Gardens in Greater London, where temperatures soared to an astonishing 35.1C in May. This not only surpassed its previous station record of 29.3C but also exceeded the UK's previous May record of 32.8C. The Met Office described this as "exceptionally nature of the heat, with values more typical of mid-summer being observed in late spring."
The record-breaking temperatures in the latter half of June 2026 were further characterized by exceptionally warm nights, dubbed "tropical nights," where the thermometer consistently refused to drop below 20C.
