Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a virtual meeting with chief ministers on Friday to assess how the West Asia conflict is shaping fuel supplies, inflation, and logistics. He framed the discussion as a shared responsibility and urged closer centre‑state coordination under a 'Team India' banner. The meeting brought together the heads of most states, with exceptions for Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, where polls are due next month.
Modi emphasised the importance of timely information to prevent panic buying and hoarding of essentials. He asked states to keep supply chains open for petrol, LPG, and other essentials, while ensuring clear communication so people don't panic over rumours. The focus was on maintaining stability in energy and price pressures while keeping critical channels functioning.
Separately, government officials indicated that steps such as reducing excise duty on petrol are part of broader relief measures to cushion households from energy shocks, as the West Asia developments feed into global markets. The PM underlined that policy levers will be used with care to balance affordability and energy security.
Additional moves included the establishment of a new inter-ministerial group to monitor the Middle East conflict's spillovers. Led by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh with senior ministers as members, the group will examine energy security, supply chains, and disruptions to the global order. Modi had earlier announced seven empowered groups to assess and mitigate the economic effects of the crisis.
Industry and policy analysts say the exercise aims to keep India resilient, ensuring fuel availability and price stability while preserving the smooth functioning of the economy. The emphasis on centre‑state collaboration, prompt information, and targeted policy tools signals a concerted, long‑term strategy to weather potential shocks, as officials insist that Team India is prepared to respond quickly.
