A major Hollywood storm is brewing as Paramount-Skydance CEO David Ellison has reportedly threatened to relocate the combined studio business out of California. This dramatic move is contingent on the state's Attorney General, Rob Bonta, dropping a lawsuit that aims to block Paramount's proposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Variety first reported that Ellison informed company executives last week that he is prepared to initiate the relocation process as early as October 1 if settlement talks regarding the antitrust lawsuit do not progress. Paramount has remained silent on the alleged threat, but the report has ignited a fierce response from state officials.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta didn't mince words, denouncing the alleged threat as an act of "blackmail." On X, Bonta stated,
Paramount has lost the plot as it continues to lose in court. It didn't work the first time, on the eve of our July lawsuit - - and it won't work this time.
He emphasized his office's commitment to challenging the deal, asserting that the "illegal merger will result in higher costs, fewer options and fewer people making movies." The legal battle is set to intensify, with a federal judge in northern California having scheduled a trial date for March 2 next year.
