Sikkim on Alert: 40 Glacial Lakes Pose High Outburst Flood Risk!

Sikkim is facing a critical environmental challenge as authorities have identified 40 high-hazard glacial lakes, with 16 of them classified as being at the highest risk of outburst floods. These potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) can unleash immense destruction, threatening both human lives and the fragile ecosystems downstream.

The urgency of this situation is underscored by a recent GLOF event in Sikkim in October 2023, which tragically resulted in at least 60 fatalities and caused extensive damage across Mangan, Gangtok, Pakyong, and Namchi districts. That disaster also obliterated the Chungthang dam, a vital part of a major hydropower project, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of such events.

During a recent media sensitisation workshop on GLOF Risk Mitigation, Principal Secretary Sandeep Tambe revealed that advanced remote sensing and satellite imagery are actively being used to monitor changes in these glacial lakes. Of the 40 hazardous lakes, 16 fall into the highest-risk Category A, two in Category B (high risk), and nine in Category C (moderate to low risk), while 13 are still awaiting classification.

The workshop emphasized the crucial role of public understanding and the need to disseminate verified, science-based information to communities.

Yougan Tamang, press secretary to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, stressed that media sensitisation is key to effectively communicating the scientific measures being undertaken to mitigate GLOF risks.

In a significant move, Sikkim's Department of Science and Technology was designated as the nodal department for GLOF hazard assessment and mitigation studies in February 2025. This work is being pursued through an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on diverse expertise.

Furthermore, Sikkim is actively developing what could become India's first dedicated GLOF Risk Mitigation Protocol.

This pioneering initiative aims to establish a standardized scientific framework for assessing, preparing for, and mitigating glacial flood risks, potentially serving as a model for other vulnerable Himalayan regions.

Field studies are comprehensive, encompassing water-level and discharge monitoring, Electrical Resistivity Tomography, geophysical and differential global positioning system surveys, and bathymetry, all crucial for understanding the dynamics of these potentially dangerous lakes and safeguarding the state from future catastrophes.
