Thousands of medical aspirants across India re-appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) on Sunday, following the cancellation of the original May 3 examination due to question paper leak allegations. The re-test, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), saw over 20 lakh students participate across 5,440 centres nationwide, including 97 in Delhi, under heightened security.
The security measures were notably strict, with many female candidates reporting double frisking and thorough physical checks, even being asked to open their hair. This intensive security was a direct response to the controversies surrounding the initial examination.
For many students, the period between the original exam's cancellation and the re-test was fraught with uncertainty, fatigue, and anxiety. Meemansa, a student from Palam, expressed how the disruption severely affected her preparation. "I was not able to study with the same determination as I had given my 100% in the first exam. All these days went in stress and self-doubt," she shared, highlighting the immense psychological toll. Another student echoed similar sentiments, stating, "Now, I just want this day to pass so that I can get rid of the stress."
Students generally found the re-test paper to be slightly tougher than the original, with Physics being identified as the most challenging section. This perception could lead to expectations of a lower cut-off this year. However, the re-test has also sparked concerns among parents regarding the admission process. A parent waiting outside an examination centre in Dwarka Sector 2 voiced apprehension that the delayed admissions would impact students' alternative career plans.
This re-examination comes at a crucial time for lakhs of young individuals striving to secure a place in medical colleges, adding another layer of challenge to an already highly competitive process.
