The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken decisive action against several food establishments across the state, suspending their licences as part of an intensified food safety enforcement drive. Among the prominent names affected are four Domino's Pizza outlets, operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd, and a Pizza Hut outlet in Karad, operated by Sapphire Foods India Ltd.
This extensive crackdown, falling under Maharashtra's 'Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra' campaign, uncovered a range of alarming hygiene and infrastructure violations. Inspectors highlighted critical issues such as inadequate pest control measures, poor segregation practices between raw and cooked food items, and missing records for cleaning and temperature monitoring. Concerns were also raised regarding water testing protocols and the absence of proper documentation for food handlers.
The Pizza Hut outlet, in particular, was cited for not having separate ovens and baking pans for vegetarian and non-vegetarian pizzas, a crucial requirement for many consumers. Additionally, some condiment packaging was found lacking essential packing or expiry dates, further underscoring the hygiene lapses.
During the comprehensive inspection drive, the FDA scrutinized a total of 104 establishments. This vigilance led to two establishments being ordered to shut down immediately, while 95 others received improvement notices, compelling them to rectify their shortcomings. The suspensions of these major food chain outlets send a strong message about the FDA's commitment to ensuring public health and safety.
