IIT Delhi Student's Death: Abetment to Suicide Case Filed Amidst Allegations

Delhi Police have registered an abetment to suicide case following the tragic death of an IIT Delhi student. The incident came to light around 8:30 am, with a PCR call reporting the student's passing.

He was immediately rushed to the institute's campus hospital, where he was unfortunately declared brought dead upon arrival.

As part of the ongoing investigation, a police team, along with a crime unit and forensic science laboratory experts, reached the campus to gather evidence. Authorities confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the scene. A mobile phone found in the deceased's pocket has been seized and is currently being examined.

Furthermore, police are obtaining the student's counselling records and other relevant information directly from the institute, scrutinizing the circumstances that led to this tragic outcome and assessing the potential role, if any, of others. This development follows serious allegations made by the deceased student's brother, who has accused IIT Delhi of "insensitivity and lack of support" during his sibling's mental health struggles.

He voiced his anguish, stating, "'Send kids to study, not return as bodies'." This statement underscores the family's deep concern about the institution's responsibility towards its students' well-being. In response to the tragedy and growing concerns, IIT Delhi had earlier expressed its profound grief and assured support to the bereaved family.

The institute has now announced the formation of an external inquiry committee to thoroughly probe the student's death.

Describing their collective sentiment as one of "profound sorrow, deep shock," the institute also shared that its students, faculty, and staff are contributing to extend financial support to the deceased student's family.
