The Southwest Monsoon is intensifying, bringing significant weather changes to Tamil Nadu starting June 21. More than ten districts, particularly around the Western Ghats, are braced for heavy rainfall as an upper air circulation and trough area persist over the region.
Residents in districts including Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, and the ghat areas of Tirunelveli district, should prepare for substantial downpours. A welcome side effect of this heavy rain is a projected drop in maximum temperatures, which are expected to fall by four to five degrees Celsius across these affected areas.
The Regional Meteorological Centre's latest bulletin confirmed this shift in weather patterns, signaling the official onset of the Southwest Monsoon. The forecast follows recent rainfall activity, with Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district recording a maximum of nine centimeters and Kakkudi in Ramanathapuram receiving eight centimeters in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday morning.
Beyond the heavy rain, a significant warning has been issued for fishermen. Squally winds, with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, are anticipated along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjoining Comorin area. Fishermen are advised to exercise extreme caution or avoid venturing into these waters.
Meanwhile, Chennai and its suburban areas can look forward to some relief from the recent heat. Light to moderate evening showers, possibly accompanied by thunder and lightning, are expected in isolated places, providing a much-needed cool down for the state capital.
