Lebanon Mourns Turtle Guardian Mona Khalil, Killed in Israeli Strike

Lebanon is mourning the loss of Mona Khalil, a beloved environmental activist whose life’s work was dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles along the country's southern coast. Khalil, 76, succumbed to injuries sustained in an Israeli strike two weeks ago, which hit her home on Mansouri beach near the southern city of Tyre.

For over 25 years, Khalil tirelessly championed the cause of loggerhead and green sea turtles, transforming a stretch of coastline into a crucial nesting site in the eastern Mediterranean. Her unwavering commitment was so profound that she reportedly refused to leave the beach she had spent decades safeguarding, even amidst escalating regional tensions. She passed away on Friday after several days in the hospital.

Mona Khalil's conservation journey began in 1999, a pivotal moment when she encountered a green turtle laying eggs on Mansouri beach. A refugee of the Lebanese civil war, she had returned from the Netherlands to visit her family home. This encounter, described by loved ones as life-changing, inspired her to dedicate herself fully to the turtles' survival, leading her to return permanently to Lebanon. She was known to speak about the beach as if it were a living entity, deeply connected to its spirit and the wildlife it harbored.

Hisham Younes, founder and president of Green Southerners, praised her as "a deeply committed environmental defender," highlighting her unique bond with the sea and its creatures. Khalil's death comes as Israeli air strikes have intensified across southern Lebanon, reigniting concerns about renewed violence despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain peace in the region. Her passing not only marks the loss of a dedicated environmentalist but also underscores the tragic human cost of the ongoing conflict.
