The Defence Acquisition Council has given the green light to a major procurement of Rafale fighter jets from France, in a deal estimated at around Rs 3.25 lakh crore. The plan emphasizes that 80% of the jets will be manufactured in India, marking a significant push for domestic manufacturing under the Make in India initiative and aiming to strengthen the Indian Air Force’s fleet amid rising regional security concerns.
This development comes as part of ongoing efforts to modernize India’s defence capabilities and broaden the supply chain for frontline aircraft. The government is also exploring additional acquisitions as part of a broader push to enhance air power, with talks reportedly continuing on deals for more Rafale jets and P-8I maritime patrol aircraft.
In parallel, military officials have signaled an intent to induct more new-generation multi-role fighters into the IAF, highlighting Rafale as a strong contender in meeting future air combat requirements. The upcoming Vayu Shakti exercise at a Pokhran range is expected to showcase air assets and the breadth of firepower available to India’s air forces, underscoring the timing and importance of these procurements.
If these plans proceed on schedule, the IAF could see a substantial uplift in its combat fleet, aligning with broader strategic goals and the objective of enhancing deterrence in the region.
