Australia confirms its first suspected mainland H5N1 bird flu case in Western Australia, found in a migratory seabird. Authorities are on high alert, preparing for a national response. What this means for biosecurity.
Australia, once the last continent untouched by the virulent H5N1 bird flu strain, is now facing its first suspected mainland case. A migratory seabird, identified as a brown skua, tested positive for avian influenza in a remote area of Western Australia's Cape Le Grand National Park. This development has sparked immediate concern among authorities regarding a potential outbreak.
Western Australia's agriculture minister, Jackie Jarvis, confirmed the suspected case on Friday, stating that further testing is underway to definitively identify the strain. "We are taking the suspected case of H5 bird flu seriously," Ms. Jarvis remarked. She emphasized that if the H5 bird incursion is confirmed, a rapid and coordinated national response would be initiated immediately.
The highly pathogenic H5 bird flu strain has been spreading globally since 2021, affecting wild bird and mammal populations, poultry, dairy farms, and even leading to some human infections among farmworkers. Australia has been proactively preparing for its inevitable arrival through stringent biosecurity measures at farms, testing shore birds, vaccinating vulnerable species, and conducting extensive response planning exercises.
Environment minister Murray Watt acknowledged these preparations, stating, "While, if confirmed, this would obviously be a very concerning development, Australia has spent the past few years preparing for this likelihood." Results confirming the exact strain for the now-deceased brown skua are anticipated soon. Additionally, another sick bird, a giant petrel, was discovered in the same area and is also undergoing testing for influenza, highlighting the ongoing vigilance required to monitor the situation.
