India began repatriating hundreds of its citizens who fled to Thailand from a notorious cyber scam hub in Myanmar. Two IAF flights ferried back 270 nationals, including 26 women, from Mae Sot to Hindon airbase in Uttar Pradesh. On arrival, the travelers were set to be questioned by investigative agencies to determine their roles, the recruitment chains, and potential accomplices, with no one allowed home until legal processes are complete.
Thai authorities had detained the returnees for immigration violations tied to their entry into the country after fleeing the Myawaddy centres near the border. Officials say more repatriation flights are planned, aiming to bring back additional nationals as investigators map out how these networks recruit and operate across borders. The broader crackdown in Myanmar around the KK Park hub and other facilities underscores a concerted multinational effort to dismantle the operations and prevent future recruitment, with many workers from India, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya reported near the areas of operation.
Experts note the problem isn’t limited to a single location: scam campuses spread along the Thai-Myanmar border and beyond, often featuring dormitories, shops, and entertainment venues that help sustain the fraud rings. The next steps involve coordinated investigations to uncover the domestic links that feed these networks and to develop strategies to stop new recruits from being drawn into the cycle.
