In a significant development for the metal world, Grammy-winning band Slipknot has confirmed the departure of longtime turntablist and keyboardist, Sid Wilson. The news, initially shared in a social media post that has since been deleted, stated, “Effective immediately, Slipknot will no longer be associated with Sid Wilson. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Wilson, who joined the Iowa-based nonet in 1998 and was known to fans as #0, played a pivotal role in shaping Slipknot's distinctive sound and energetic live performances for nearly three decades. His departure marks another notable change in the band's lineup in recent years.
This split follows a series of high-profile departures from the masked metal outfit. In 2019, percussionist Chris Fehn exited the band amidst a legal dispute over alleged unpaid dues. Just last year, in 2023, keyboardist-sampler Craig Jones, a member since 1996, also left. Later in 2023, drummer Jay Weinberg, who had dedicated a decade to Slipknot, was let go due to what the band termed a “creative decision.”
Jay Weinberg, reflecting on his own departure in an April interview, shared his journey of processing the change: “Processing it over the last two years, I’ve wanted to take that experience and obviously learn from it. I’m going into creative environments, say a studio or playing live, where there is love for one another, and respect for one another, in ways that I’ve never experienced before.”
The band's evolving structure comes as Slipknot also made significant business moves. Last year, they entered into a partnership with HarbourView Equity Partners, selling a majority stake in their extensive music catalog, including publishing and recording royalties. This deal, announced after 25 years in the music business, signals a new chapter for the iconic group. Fans are now left wondering what these consistent lineup changes mean for the future sound and direction of Slipknot.
