Only 41 cinemas across the globe are equipped to project films in the IMAX 1570 format, a technology Nolan champions for its unparalleled visual clarity. This scarcity means that for many, seeing "The Odyssey" as the visionary director intended requires significant travel. A prime example is the IMAX cinema in Melbourne, Australia, which holds the unique distinction of being the sole facility in the entire southern hemisphere capable of screening a 1570 reel. This has transformed Melbourne into a pilgrimage site, attracting fans from as far as Turkey, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, and Los Angeles.
Nolan's commitment to the format is deep-seated. The Melbourne IMAX had, like many others, removed its film projector in 2015. However, following Nolan's global appeal for cinemas to show his 2017 film "Dunkirk" in 1570, the Melbourne venue reinstated its projector two years later. This dedication is further highlighted by the immense technical challenges involved in shooting "The Odyssey" entirely on 1570 cameras.
These cameras are notoriously heavy, loud, and demand frequent reloading—approximately every three minutes during shooting. To overcome the noise issue and record dialogue on 1570 for the first time, Nolan collaborated with IMAX to develop a soundproofing "blimp" to house the 180kg camera. The resulting film reel is a colossal feat in itself, stretching over 17 kilometers and weighing a staggering 240 kilograms. For fans, this arduous production process and Nolan's unwavering vision underscore the unique value of seeing the film in its highest possible resolution, making every mile traveled a worthwhile pursuit of cinematic perfection.
