A fast-moving grassfire near a golf course in Stourbridge, West Midlands, has caused significant destruction, damaging several homes and forcing residents to evacuate. The blaze, which covered approximately 16 hectares (40 acres), was one of multiple large fires scorching the region on what was recorded as the UK's hottest day of the year.
Emergency services were alerted just before 1:30 PM on Thursday, with 12 fire engines and around 60 crew members dispatched to combat the inferno. The West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that the wildfire had multiple points of origin and quickly spread, engulfing woodland and directly impacting residential properties. Six homes were reported damaged, and some areas experienced power disruptions as a result of the blaze.
The human toll of the incident is also significant. Four individuals, including three firefighters and one child, were taken to the hospital for treatment. Additionally, six other people received treatment for smoke inhalation on site. The severity of the situation prompted authorities to open Stourbridge town hall as a refuge for those displaced, with the fire service assisting residents who couldn't travel independently.
The widespread smoke, fire, and fallen trees led to the closure of local roads and disruption of some rail services, impacting travel across the area. This incident highlights the extreme challenges faced by emergency services during periods of intense heat and underscores the devastating impact wildfires can have on communities.
