Europe Ablaze: 20,000+ Evacuated as Wildfires Rage Amid 40C+ Heatwave

Tens of thousands of people across southern Europe have been forced to flee their homes as an extreme heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 44C, fuels devastating wildfires. From Sicily to Spain and France, vast infernos are sweeping through communities, leading to widespread evacuations and significant disruption.

In southwestern France, near the popular coastal town of Lège-Cap Ferret, more than 20,000 individuals have been evacuated. Officials reported that some 700 firefighters are battling the blazes around Bordeaux, where two firefighters tragically lost their lives earlier this week. The mayor of Lège-Cap Ferret, Philippe de Gonneville, acknowledged the rapid spread of the fire, emphasizing the challenge faced by emergency services. Authorities confirmed that 12,000 people had already been evacuated, with an additional 8,800 on the move.

Meanwhile, Sicily is also grappling with massive fires. Dramatic footage shows flames engulfing the hills around Bivona in the central Agrigento province, and the capital, Palermo, has experienced significant blackouts. Neighboring Spain is similarly affected, with firefighters, emergency personnel, and military units working tirelessly to contain ongoing blazes. Train traffic near Madrid, specifically between Mejorada del Campo and Alcalá de Henares, had to be suspended due to a wildfire close to the tracks.

The current crisis extends beyond the continent, as Wales became the first UK region to officially declare a drought amidst record dry conditions, intense heatwaves, and dwindling rivers. Experts point to extreme heat, supercharged by climate change, as a major factor. Warmer air is drawing moisture from soils and rivers across Europe, making the region highly susceptible to these destructive wildfires this year. Water bombers have been deployed across southern Europe in a desperate bid to control the spreading flames.
