Air India is making big moves, announcing significant pay raises for its pilots, ranging from 8% to a substantial 15%. This strategic decision comes as the airline aims to tackle fleet shortages, improve career advancement opportunities, and bolster its operations.
Commanders are set to receive the biggest boosts in their salaries, while first officers will now have a clearer path to becoming commanders. Under the new framework, co-pilots will first gain command upgrades within Air India Express, which operates single-aisle aircraft. Following this, they will transition to Air India, flying wide-body aircraft with higher compensation, creating a structured career progression within the Tata Group's aviation portfolio.
The airline has also revamped its compensation model. While maintaining a guaranteed pay for 40 flying hours, Air India has enhanced its flying allowance rates for hours beyond this threshold. This adjustment aims to align pilot compensation with industry standards and reward increased productivity. For example, a senior commander flying 55 hours a month will now earn Rs 8.3 lakh, a notable increase from Rs 7.5 lakh. Similarly, a first officer's salary will rise to Rs 3.3 lakh from just over Rs 3 lakh.
Beyond pilot remuneration, Air India is also restoring its international flight services. Routes that were scaled back following the West Asia crisis are set to return to their January-February levels next month. This expansion comes despite challenges like the Pakistan airspace closure, which necessitates longer routes and thus increases flying time and the demand for more pilots. Since the Tata Group acquired Air India and Air India Express in January 2022, the combined fleet has expanded impressively from approximately 100 to 300 aircraft.
