Labour MPs Push Burnham to Boost Paternity Leave Amid Cost of Living Crisis

Pressure is mounting on prominent Labour figure Andy Burnham to champion the cause of increasing statutory paternity leave, with over a quarter of his own party's MPs urging action. This push comes amidst growing concerns about the cost of living crisis and its disproportionate impact on families, particularly the lowest-paid fathers.

A significant group of 105 Labour MPs has penned a letter to the Prime Minister, emphasizing the critical need to boost support for new fathers. They argue that increasing paid leave is an "obvious" step to alleviate financial strain, pointing out that current meagre provisions make it difficult for many fathers to take time off to support their families after childbirth.

Support for the initiative is widespread within the Labour party, with reports indicating that almost half of Labour's 403 MPs have explicitly backed improvements to paternity leave. This includes a significant number of party officials, such as two secretaries of state, 11 ministers, and six whips, demonstrating a strong consensus behind the proposed changes.

One supporter noted that this represents nearly a quarter of all government office holders, with many more expressing private support for the cause. While the government's official parental leave review is slated for December, many MPs are hopeful that definitive action will be taken much sooner.

The parliamentarians, in their communications, have specifically highlighted the dire situation in constituencies like Makerfield (Burnham's former constituency), where it's estimated that half of all fathers cannot afford to take paternity leave under current conditions.
