Explosive blast at Nowgam Police Station injures eight in Srinagar

A massive explosion ripped through the Nowgam police station in Srinagar late Friday night, injuring eight people, three of them critically, and setting multiple vehicles on fire. The blast sent a surge of flames and smoke across the police premises, with responders rushing the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The incident comes as investigators had been examining a large cache of explosives—said to include ammonium nitrate—that were seized in raids across states, including Faridabad in Haryana. A joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Forensic Science Laboratory had been surveying the confiscated material when the blast occurred, officials indicated.

Authorities had recently uncovered an inter-State terror module, with around 2,900 kg of explosive-making material recovered during raids. Investigations have highlighted the module’s alleged activities in fundraising, logistics, and procurement of arms and bomb-making components, with seven locals arrested earlier in connection with the posters found in the Nowgam area on October 19.

In the wake of the blast, the police have not publicly confirmed the exact cause or the casualty figure beyond the eight injured, and the situation remains under active investigation. The incident underscores continuing security concerns in the region as authorities pursue clarity on the inter-State module and its links to the Faridabad seizures.
