IYC Chief Uday Chib Granted Bail Over AI Summit Protest

A Delhi court granted bail to Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib in connection with the Bharat Mandapam protest at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. The court had already allowed four days of police custody to question him, but later ordered that he remain in judicial custody until Sunday pending bail verification.

The bench noted that 'no person shall be devoid of his liberty on mere conjectures' and stressed that bail is the rule while jail is the exception. It added that the 'right to life and liberty is the soul of the Indian Constitution.'

Chib, who has strong roots in the community, faces the investigation as authorities seek the whereabouts of two co-accused and the arrest of others. His counsel emphasized Article 21 protecting liberty, while the public prosecutor argued for extending custody for further inquiries. The court, however, dismissed the extension request, saying cogent reasons were not shown.

Beyond the courtroom drama, the protest at the AI Summit highlighted ongoing tensions in youth politics and the use of protests in political mobilization. The case will continue through the legal process as investigators push for more clarity on the events and participants involved.

Proceedings had previously centered on the large-scale demonstration at Bharat Mandapam, a key venue for the summit, with authorities balancing public order and the right to assemble.
