Switzerland-US Tariffs Cut to 15% in Landmark Trade Deal

Switzerland and the United States have reached a trade agreement to cut the steep 39% tariffs on Swiss imports to 15%, a move aimed at easing pressure on Swiss exporters and restoring calmer ties after months of tariff shocks. The deal includes a non-binding memorandum of understanding and sets the stage for a broader pact that could feature quotas on certain imports and other trade measures.

Under the terms, US tariffs would be capped at 15%, aligning with duties on the European Union. In exchange, Swiss officials pledged quotas on certain imports from the United States. Part of the push included high-profile Swiss industry leaders visiting the White House, where gifts to the president — including a Rolex watch and an engraved gold bar — were exchanged as part of a ceremonial tableau.

Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin called the outcome a “great relief” for the economy, noting the damage inflicted when tariffs were increased last August. Swiss business chiefs who had met with the president in Washington reportedly helped seal the deal.

Critics on both sides argued about who benefits from the compromise; some lawmakers warned that inflation and the cost of living in the United States could be affected, while others questioned whether corporate interests had too much sway. Nevertheless, the agreement signals a cautious step toward stabilizing trade relations between the two nations, with a focus on jobs, exports, and investment — including a promised $200 billion Swiss investment in the United States.
