Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently led the nation in observing 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' on August 14, paying heartfelt tribute to the countless individuals impacted by the tumultuous events of Partition. Since 2021, this day has been dedicated to remembering those who lost their lives, were displaced, and suffered immensely during the country's division and the subsequent exodus.
In a moving message shared on X, PM Modi emphasized the courage of those who faced this historical tragedy. "Today we mark #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay. We recall the courage of all those who were impacted by Partition. It was a moment in history that tore apart several lives… families were uprooted, loved ones were lost, and immense suffering was endured," he stated.
Beyond the remembrance of suffering, the Prime Minister highlighted the incredible resilience shown by survivors. He noted how people, overcoming unimaginable odds, "rebuilt their lives from nothing, turned adversity into achievement and contributed immensely to our nation’s progress." Their journeys, he added, serve as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. Modi also expressed his hope that this day would deepen the nation's resolve to preserve harmony and brotherhood, collectively working towards building a 'Viksit Bharat' or Developed India.
The observance also saw political commentary surrounding the historical event. RSS leader Sunil Ambekar attributed the 1947 Partition to a 'population imbalance.' Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) utilized its X handle to share an AI-generated video for the day, featuring former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Addressing an event in Gurugram, BJP president Nitin Nabin underscored the devastating scale of Partition, stating that over 1.5 crore families were displaced and more than 30 lakh people lost their lives. Nabin explicitly held the Congress party and the Nehru-Gandhi family responsible for the country's division, asserting that political power was prioritized over the dreams of millions of Indians seeking freedom.
