Tesla Autopilot Crash Kills Texas Woman in Her Home
A 76-year-old woman was tragically killed when a Tesla on "autopilot" crashed into her Texas home. Driver claims automated system was engaged.
A devastating incident in Katy, Texas, has left a community in shock after a 76-year-old woman, Martha Avila, was killed when a Tesla reportedly operating on "autopilot" crashed into her home. The driver, Michael Butler, was behind the wheel of a Tesla Model 3 when it veered off the road and slammed into Avila's residence on Friday evening.
Harris County officials reported that the vehicle struck Martha Avila, who was inside her home. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries. Her daughter, Jennifer Barbour, expressed profound grief, telling KHOU 11 that her mother was "super healthy, she was 76, on no medication, nothing, had no health issues. She would have made it to 100 like my grandma."
Butler, who also received medical attention, informed investigators that the car's "autopilot" system was active at the time of the crash, according to Terry Allbritton of Harris County Precinct 5. Authorities noted that Butler showed "no signs of intoxication" and has cooperated fully with the ongoing investigation. As of now, no charges have been filed.
The impact of the crash was severe, leaving a massive hole in the front of the home and debris scattered across the yard. Jennifer Barbour revealed that the Tesla crashed directly into her children's playroom. The children were at a neighbor's house when the incident occurred, sparing them from physical harm, but the family is understandably devastated.
“My three kids were at my neighbor’s when we went to the hospital to check on my mom. And then they told us they couldn’t save her,” Barbour recounted. “We came back and we told the kids. The kids are devastated, and we brought them back to the hotel. We’ve been here since. I’m still wearing the same clothes from yesterday.” The family is now grappling with the loss of their matriarch and the destruction of their home, seeking answers as to what caused such a horrific accident.
