DMK Allies Rally Against SIR in Tamil Nadu’s Central Region
DMK and allies protest the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across Tiruchirappalli and nearby central Tamil Nadu districts, accusing the ECI of bowing to the Centre.
The DMK and its allies held demonstrations in Tiruchirappalli and several central-region districts on Tuesday to oppose the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, or SIR. The protests were organized after a directive from the DMK high command. Demonstrators accused the Election Commission of acting as a puppet of the BJP-led government at the Centre, and carried placards near the Collectorate in Tiruchirappalli where police said more than 3,000 DMK and allied workers took part.
Similar protests spread to Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai, with police sources noting coordinated actions across the region. Later, reports also described demonstrations in Salem and Coimbatore as part of the statewide push against SIR.
Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has stressed that stopping SIR is the DMK's foremost duty, underscoring the party's hard line in the run-up to elections. The demonstrations reflect a rising political temperature as parties clash over how voter rolls should be refreshed.
While the DMK frames the exercise as a threat to electoral fairness, the marches highlight the party's willingness to mobilize volunteers and engage voters in the central region. The broader impact on local politics remains to be seen as police monitor the protests.
