Senior IAS officer Mahantesh Bilagi and two relatives die in a road crash near Kalaburagi, with investigators probing the circumstances.
A tragic road accident in Kalaburagi district claimed the life of senior IAS officer Mahantesh Bilagi and two relatives on Monday. Bilagi, who had risen to the position of managing director of the Karnataka State Minerals Corporation Limited, was traveling from Vijayapura to Kalaburagi to attend a relative's wedding when their Innova collided near Gounahalli. Bilagi sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Kalaburagi, where he succumbed to his injuries. The two relatives, Shankar Bilagi and Eranna Bilagi, also died at the scene. Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Bilagi's career spanned several key public service roles. He had previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayats in multiple districts and as a District Collector. He later headed BESCOM as managing director before taking charge of the Minerals Corporation. Colleagues described him as an efficient officer known for public service initiatives and his ability to deliver on complex projects. The loss is being described as irreplaceable by leaders across the state.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed grief over Bilagi's death, noting his reputation for integrity and teamwork. They highlighted his contributions to rural development and energy projects, and they offered condolences to his family and colleagues. The incident has prompted officials to review road safety measures in the region and to ensure a thorough, transparent investigation into what caused the crash.
Beyond the public administration circles, Bilagi's passing is being mourned by many who interacted with him during his service in Zilla Panchayats and as a district administrator.
