KL Rahul to captain India in ODIs as Gill ruled out with neck injury
KL Rahul steps in as India's ODI captain for the South Africa series after Shubman Gill suffers a neck injury; with Iyer out, Rahul faces a leadership test.
KL Rahul is set to lead India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30 in Ranchi, after Shubman Gill was ruled out with a neck injury more serious than initially thought. With vice-captain Shreyas Iyer also sidelined with a rib cage injury, Rahul will step back into the leadership role for the 50-over format after a two-year gap. Gill’s situation has prompted the selectors to consider a stop-gap captain and adjust the squad accordingly. Tests are underway to determine whether the issue is muscular or nerve-related, and Gill has received injections to help manage symptoms while rest and rehabilitation are planned. In addition to Gill’s uncertain future, there is a strong possibility he may also miss the T20I series, depending on how his recovery progresses. A spinal specialist has been consulted, and findings have been shared with the chief selector as part of the ongoing assessment.
