NHS Radiographers Face Shocking Racist Abuse from Patients

A disturbing new report has revealed a significant rise in overt racist abuse endured by NHS radiographers at the hands of patients. A survey of 381 members of the Society of Radiographers painted a stark picture, indicating a "noticeable" increase in such incidents over the past 18 months across the health service.

Radiographers reported being subjected to appalling slurs, including being called "monkeys" and "dirty foreigners." Shockingly, some patients openly refused to be treated by Black or Asian staff. Other distressing examples included patients making derogatory comments about the skin colour of their caregivers and openly remarking about "people coming over here and taking our jobs" in front of the very staff they were demeaning.

One particular incident highlighted the insidious nature of the abuse: a patient made jokes about a radiographer's headscarf and then complained about not being able to understand her, despite the radiographer speaking with a mild Yorkshire accent. Another patient, awaiting an X-ray, flat-out refused a Black radiographer, stating, "Black people frighten me."

Professor Habib Naqvi, chief executive of the NHS Race and Health Observatory, described these cases as a "sobering reminder of the racism, prejudice and hatred that persist in our society." He emphasized the profound impact these experiences have on healthcare staff, who "create real fear, trauma and anxiety among our diverse workforce." Prof. Naqvi firmly stated that the NHS "could not function without the skill, dedication and compassion of healthcare workers from across the world" and called for a "clear, consistently enforced zero-tolerance approach" to racism throughout the NHS. This urgent call underscores the necessity for immediate and decisive action to protect those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
