Nicaragua's Ortega: No More Elections! Democracy in Peril?

Nicaragua's long-serving president, Daniel Ortega, has made a startling declaration that has sent shockwaves through the international community: the country will hold no further elections. The 80-year-old authoritarian leader, in power since 2007, announced this decision on Sunday during the official ceremony commemorating the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Sandinista revolution.

Ortega, who appeared in public for the first time in 61 days, stated his intention to work with the congress he controls to enact new laws designed to "build a wall" against the opposition. During his speech to thousands of state employees, who local media reported were coerced into attending, Ortega explicitly declared, "There will be no more elections here so that they [the opposition parties] can try to seize the government, seize power."
