A significant political development is unfolding as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has reportedly laid down a clear condition for Sharad Pawar's faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) to join its ranks: a complete merger with the rival NCP led by Ajit Pawar. This move comes amidst growing speculation about the NCP(SP)'s potential support for the NDA, particularly concerning the Delimitation Bill.
Sources within the Mahayuti alliance indicate that the ball is now squarely in Mr. Pawar's court. The BJP has allegedly communicated its unwillingness to accept two separate NCP factions within its alliance, believing it sends a "wrong message" to other coalition partners. Therefore, the path to joining the NDA for Sharad Pawar's group appears to be conditional on uniting with his nephew Ajit Pawar's party, forming a single, unified NCP entity.
However, leaders from both the NCP(SP) and Ajit Pawar's NCP have expressed strong doubts about the feasibility of such a merger. A senior leader highlighted significant "leadership issues" that make unification challenging. Within the NCP(SP), there are reported internal rifts among the second-line leadership after Sharad Pawar. Similarly, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP is said to have senior leaders unhappy with the leadership of Sunetra Pawar and her sons. These internal dynamics present substantial hurdles to any potential reunification.
Adding another layer to the political matrix, Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde has reportedly been asked to distance himself from these discussions, even as restlessness grows within the NCP(SP) camp. While some leaders in Sharad Pawar's group had shown inclination to join Mr. Shinde's party, Mr. Shinde has not displayed any interest in such an arrangement.
The context for these alliance talks also includes the crucial Delimitation Bill. During the last session, the NCP(SP) had voted against the Bill, aligning with the INDIA Bloc. However, NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule has now hinted at a possible shift, suggesting that opposition might be minimal if the government increases 50 percent of seats in all states and provides a written formula for the delimitation's implementation. This indicates a potential willingness to negotiate on key legislative matters.
Currently, Sharad Pawar's NCP(SP) holds eight Lok Sabha MPs, while Sunetra Pawar's NCP has one sitting Lok Sabha MP.
