In Sundargarh town, a market clash over a minor dispute between two youths escalated into a broader confrontation, prompting a security crackdown. By Friday morning, authorities had imposed prohibitory orders, suspended internet services, and ordered the closure of schools, colleges, and most shops in the Sundargarh municipality area to curb violence.
Two suspects have been detained as raids continue based on CCTV footage to identify others involved. Police have deployed nine additional platoons, bringing the total to 19, with security agencies monitoring nearby Rourkela and Rajgangpur for any flare-ups. There have been no fresh incidents since the late afternoon on Thursday.
Regent Market in Sundargarh became the focal point of the violence, which investigators say began after a dispute between two groups over food items. Both sides allegedly used sharp weapons and stones during the clash. The district administration has banned gatherings and protests while planning a peace committee meeting with community leaders.
District Collector Subhankar Mohapatra said educational institutions within the municipal area would remain closed as a safety measure, and only essential services would operate. He added that the government is urging citizens to maintain peace and not to be swayed by rumors.
Raids are ongoing as authorities review CCTV footage, and more detentions could follow as persons of interest are identified. The overarching goal is to restore normalcy and prevent a recurrence of violence in Sundargarh and nearby towns.
