Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra are grappling with severe disruptions as relentless monsoon rains continue to batter the region for a third consecutive day. The incessant downpour has exposed significant vulnerabilities in the state's infrastructure, leading to widespread chaos and concern.
One of the most alarming incidents saw the recently inaugurated Mumbai-Pune Expressway missing link shut down just two months after its opening. A landslide near one of its tunnels forced traffic onto the older Khandala Ghat route, highlighting immediate challenges. Adding to the woes, a section of a flyover on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Palghar tragically caved in, despite having undergone recent repairs, raising questions about construction quality and maintenance.
The heavy rainfall has brought the bustling city to a near standstill, severely impacting daily life and critical services. Road, rail, and air travel have all faced significant disruptions, with numerous train cancellations and flight delays. Many parts of Mumbai are battling severe waterlogging, making commuting nearly impossible and forcing residents to stay indoors.
In response to the extreme weather conditions and warnings, schools and colleges across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts have been declared closed today. Authorities remain on high alert, especially with a cloudburst alert issued for Nashik, as the intense rainfall shows no signs of abating across the state. The connectivity between Pune and Mumbai was also cut off for several hours due to the rain's impact on highways and railway tracks, further isolating the regions.
