A significant incident unfolded in East London as approximately 125 firefighters, backed by twenty fire engines, were deployed to tackle a large fire on a railway embankment in Walthamstow. The blaze, which erupted near Vallentin Road, has caused considerable disruption and concern among local residents.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that the fire affected one house directly and caused damage to a rear extension of a second home. The gardens of around 30 properties were also unfortunately impacted. The incident is believed to have been sparked by an electrical fire, potentially caused by a fallen tree.
The LFB issued warnings about a “significant amount of smoke” billowing from the scene and advised people in the immediate vicinity to keep their windows and doors closed. Motorists were also urged to steer clear of the area, particularly Wood Street, to allow emergency services to operate freely. As a direct consequence of the fire, parts of the Weaver Overground line have been temporarily closed, causing delays for commuters.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. Firefighting efforts involved advanced equipment, including a 32-meter turntable ladder used as a water tower to douse the flames from above, and the brigade’s drone team providing aerial oversight. Assistant Commissioner Tom Goodall praised the crews, stating they worked under “hot and arduous conditions” to bring the fire under control as swiftly as possible, preventing further spread to additional properties. Fire crews from Tottenham, Bethnal Green, Walthamstow, Chingford, and surrounding stations were all involved in the extensive operation.
