India secures a landmark $630M BrahMos missile deal with Indonesia during PM Modi's Jakarta visit. This boosts India's defence exports and strengthens strategic Indo-Pacific ties.
India has secured a significant defence deal with Indonesia, agreeing to supply BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Indonesian military. The landmark pact was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jakarta, where he held talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This agreement not only involves the world's fastest cruise missiles but also includes the provision of Astra air-to-air missiles.
The deal, estimated to be worth around $630 million (₹5,985 crore), marks a major milestone for India's defence export ambitions. With this, Indonesia becomes the third country, after the Philippines and Vietnam, to acquire the advanced BrahMos missiles. This move is seen as a strategic expansion of India's defence industry and is expected to deepen its ties with Southeast Asia's largest economy.
The timing of this agreement is crucial, coming amidst increasing geopolitical competition with China for influence in the Indo-Pacific region. The BrahMos missile, a joint venture between India and Russia, is renowned for its speed and versatility, capable of being launched from land, sea, and air platforms. The Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles are designed to be integrated into the Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets already operated by the Indonesian Air Force.
Randhir Jaiswal, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, highlighted the outcomes of the discussions, emphasizing cooperation on the BrahMos System. Jaiswal stated that the agreement "demonstrates the capability of the Indian defense industry," "strengthens Atmanirbhar Bharat and boosts indigenous defence manufacturing," and "promotes innovation, global competitiveness and exports." He also noted that the Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement "boosts India’s defense exports and Make-in-India for the world," enhancing technology collaboration and strengthening India’s indigenous missile development ecosystem. PM Modi's visit underscored India's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership and furthering its Act East policy in the region.
