A parapet from a section of the under-construction elevated Metro 4 corridor collapsed on LBS Road in Mulund, Mumbai, on Saturday afternoon, killing a 46-year-old man and injuring three others. The victim, Ramdhani Yadav, sat on the back of an autorickshaw when the segment fell, officials said. The autorickshaw driver and other passengers sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Five people have been arrested in connection with the incident. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has imposed a fine of ₹5 crore on the contractor Reliance Infrastructure-Astaldi (RAJV) and its sub-contractor Milan Road Buildtech LLP. A general consultant linked to the project—a consortium of DB Engineering & Consulting, Hill International Inc, and Louis Berger Consulting Private Limited (DB Hill LBG)—was fined ₹1 crore, the authority stated.
The state government has ordered a thorough probe into the collapse. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the inquiry and said financial assistance of ₹5 lakh would be provided to the kin of the deceased. The incident has prompted concerns about safety standards on ongoing infrastructure projects and the potential consequences of cost-cutting measures.
Authorities emphasized that Sunday morning’s incident is under investigation and that the public will be kept informed as new details emerge. Opposition parties criticized the government’s handling of the event, urging transparency and accountability for those responsible for the lapse.
