Dras witnessed a heartfelt tribute to India's Kargil War heroes this past Saturday evening, as the Indian Army hosted a poignant 'Shaurya Sandhya' at the Kargil War Memorial. Despite the rain, the ceremony shone brightly, honoring the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1999 conflict. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was present, personally handing over ceremonial kalash to families of the fallen heroes, a deeply moving gesture.
The solemn occasion was graced by several high-ranking officials, including Ladakh LG V K Saxena, Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth, and Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, along with many military veterans. The air was filled with patriotism as the Ladakh Scouts band performed stirring songs like "Maa Tujhe Salaam." Guests later participated in a candle-lighting ceremony near the main obelisk, adding to the somber yet inspiring atmosphere.
As dusk settled, the 'Veer Bhoomi' — the cenotaph zone of the memorial — was beautifully illuminated, with hundreds of neatly arranged stones creating a powerful and aesthetic visual. This event was part of a larger two-day commemoration marking the 27th anniversary of Operation Vijay, which officially falls on July 26.
Earlier in the day, the Army had organized various activities, including the 'Yudh Sansmaran' at the picturesque Lamochen viewpoint, offering a stunning vista of the historic Kargil battlefield. The Defence Minister is also scheduled to be the chief guest at the 'Shradhanjali Samaroh' on Sunday, where he will pay homage to the 1999 war bravehearts alongside the Army chief, veterans, and next of kin.
Operation Vijay holds a significant place in India's history, symbolizing the unwavering courage and resolve of Indian soldiers. They faced snow-clad peaks and relentless firing from Pakistani troops, ultimately reclaiming the strategic heights of Kargil and securing a decisive victory for the nation.
