A terrifying incident in Solihull saw a businessman brutally attacked with hammers by masked intruders who threatened to kill his heavily pregnant wife's baby if he didn't transfer hundreds of thousands of pounds in cryptocurrency. The "horrific" ordeal, described by the anonymous couple, highlights a disturbing rise in violent "wrench attacks" targeting crypto investors.
The victim, identified by the BBC as "James," recounts how three masked men forced their way into his Solihull home in December last year, initiating a 45-minute assault. He attempted to fight them off but was repeatedly struck on the face, head, and ribs with hammers. Simultaneously, his seven-months pregnant wife was held down on the sofa, a pillow pressed over her face.
James described hearing her screams, "I can't breathe," as the assailants suffocated her. The criminals initially seemed unaware of how to access his digital assets, instead taking instructions from a fourth accomplice connected via a live video call. This individual directed the attackers to examine James's phone for crypto apps.
Once a wallet containing substantial funds was identified, the threats escalated dramatically. James recalled the voice on the call declaring,
Look, if you don't send us this money now, we're going to stab your wife in the stomach and kill your baby. We're going to kill your wife.
His wife, also speaking anonymously, described the attack as terrifying, fearing for her husband's life when he lay unresponsive.
She was concerned the extreme stress would cause her to lose her baby. Fortunately, she gave birth to a healthy, full-term child. The men eventually left after James transferred his crypto savings, hundreds of thousands of pounds, to the digital wallet of the man on the video call.
They also stole several luxury Rolex watches.
Before their departure, James overheard the mastermind on the video call instructing his accomplices, "You can have 10 grand each but I am taking the rest." This incident, now under investigation with Crimestoppers offering a £10,000 reward for information, exemplifies a growing and violent trend.
Unlike traditional bank accounts, cryptocurrency often gives owners direct control, making them attractive targets for criminals seeking speed, anonymity, and irreversibility in transactions. While most crypto theft occurs online, experts like Chainalysis report a surge in "wrench attacks," where physical violence is used to compel crypto holders to transfer funds.
Such violent robberies linked to digital assets have been reported across the UK, France, and the US, with recovery of transferred funds proving extremely difficult.
