Turkish Deep-Sea Vessel Joins Hunt for 20 Missing in Cyprus Ferry Disaster

The tragic capsizing of the high-speed passenger ferry, Filo Jet, off the northern coast of Cyprus on Sunday has prompted a massive international search and rescue effort, with a Turkish deep-sea vessel now joining the critical mission. As of late Monday, eight lives have been confirmed lost, and a harrowing 20 individuals remain unaccounted for, escalating the urgency of the ongoing operations.

The Filo Jet, carrying 267 passengers and crew, was en route from Kyrenia to Taşucu on the Turkish mainland when it began to take on water. Fortunately, a significant number of those on board, 241, were successfully rescued. The majority of the passengers were identified as Turkish or Turkish Cypriot.

The incident has plunged the region into grief, with northern Cyprus observing three days of national mourning.

A pivotal development in the search is the arrival of the TCG Isin, a specialized deep-sea search and rescue vessel from Turkey. Its advanced capabilities are expected to be crucial in locating the ferry's voyage data recorder, which lies an astonishing 514 meters below the surface. This deep-sea expertise could be instrumental in understanding the cause of the disaster and potentially finding any remaining clues.

Officials are resolute in their commitment. Tufan Erhürman, visiting Kyrenia's new port where anxious relatives gathered, vowed that search efforts would "continue with the same intensity, with no interruption, through the day and night." This pledge underscores the determination to leave no stone unturned in the quest for answers and, hopefully, more survivors.

The disaster has also garnered international sympathy. Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the Anglo-Cypriot founder of easyJet, demonstrated solidarity by offering €260,000 (£223,000) in support for the families affected by the tragedy, a gesture widely praised by Turkish Cypriot authorities. This financial aid provides a glimmer of support amidst the profound sorrow gripping the community.

The search teams, including divers, continue to scour the deep waters, holding onto hope for those still missing.
