Canada's Kone Undergoes Successful Surgery After Horrific World Cup Injury!
Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone has undergone successful surgery for a severe leg break sustained in the World Cup qualifier. His team vows to fight on!
Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone has undergone successful surgery to repair severe fractures in his lower left leg, an injury that regrettably ends his FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. The 24-year-old sustained the horrific injury, involving both the tibia and fibula bones, during Canada’s dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar on Thursday.
Canada Soccer confirmed the procedure on Friday, stating that Kone is expected to make a full recovery. The surgery took place in Vancouver, the same city where the crucial qualifier unfolded. The incident occurred in the 51st minute of the Group B encounter when Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo's challenge brought Kone down. Trainers immediately rushed to his aid as he lay in visible discomfort, eventually being stretchered off the pitch while managing a brave thumbs-up to the fans.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch vividly recalled the moment, stating he "could hear the bone snap." Marsch later visited Kone in the hospital, noting the midfielder's remarkable resilience despite the pain. "He was in really good spirits and he was adamant that he's going to be fine," Marsch shared. The coach also revealed that the 90-minute surgery was performed by three top surgeons who had watched the incident on television and were prepared for Kone's arrival.
A video review of the play resulted in a red card for Madibo, Qatar's second of the game, leaving them with nine players. Madibo later offered his apologies to Kone for the challenge. Despite the setback, Kone's teammates are rallying around him, with high emotions evident throughout the squad and a clear determination to "finish the job for him."
Canada, currently sitting on four points, is now preparing for a decisive match against Switzerland on Wednesday. Switzerland, also with four points after thrashing Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1, will contend for the top spot in Group B, with Canada aiming to secure their position despite the unfortunate loss of a key player.
