New Skoda Kushaq facelift launches in India with major updates and new transmission but questions linger over timing and market relevance against fierce competition.
Pune India, Skoda Auto India has formally launched the 2026 Kushaq facelift in the domestic market. This first major update since the SUV’s 2021 debut brings exterior revisions, interior upgrades, and a new eight-speed automatic transmission option. Pre-bookings opened in January 2026 with deliveries slated to start by March.
The timing is critical. India’s compact SUV segment is intensely competitive. Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and new entrants such as Tata Sierra and Maruti Victoris have raised expectations for value and technology among buyers. Against this backdrop the facelift must not only refresh looks but address performance and overall package.
Powertrain and Drivetrain Subsystems
The updated Kushaq continues with Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0-IN platform developed specifically for India and shared with the Slavia sedan and Taigun SUV. This platform supports a front-engine front-wheel-drive layout.
Engine options remain turbocharged petrol units: a 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder TSI. The 1.0 TSI engine pairs with the new AISIN-sourced eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission (model AQ300) and a six-speed manual gearbox. The 1.5 TSI unit retains Volkswagen’s 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission of German origin with paddle shifters.
Major subsystems and likely suppliers include:
- Engine: 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI turbocharged petrol units, Volkswagen Group TSI family (manufactured in Chakan India).
- Transmission: 8-speed torque converter automatic, AISIN (Japan) sourced; 7-speed DSG, Volkswagen Group Germany.
- Drivetrain: Front-wheel-drive differential and half shafts — Volkswagen Group MQB-A0-IN components.
- Braking: Four-wheel disc brakes on 1.5-litre variant; ABS with Electronic Stability Control (supplier systems usually Bosch or Continental, though specific OEM partners are not publicly disclosed).
- Steering: Electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system from Continental/Robert Bosch GmbH (industry standard on MQB-derived platforms).
- Suspension: McPherson strut front and twist beam rear arrangement using Volkswagen Group components.
- Chassis And Platform: MQB-A0-IN modular matrix platform co-developed by Skoda and VW teams in India and Czech Republic.
Feature And Design Updates
Externally the facelift adopts Skoda’s Modern Solid design language with a reworked grille, new LED headlamps, updated bumpers and sequential LED taillights. Inside the SUV gains larger infotainment screens, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, Google Automotive AI support, panoramic sunroof and rear seat massage on higher trims. Safety remains robust with six airbags and five-star Global NCAP ratings.
These improvements narrow the gap with rivals that offer Level-2 ADAS and advanced connectivity, though Skoda notably has not confirmed a full suite of adaptive safety systems at launch.
Is It Too Late For India?
The key question is whether this facelift is Skoda’s last real chance to expand the Kushaq’s share in India’s mid-size SUV segment. The original Kushaq helped restart Skoda’s momentum under the India 2.0 strategy and strong export demand to ASEAN and Middle East markets.
However sales mix data from recent years indicate that while Skoda’s overall India performance has grown, demand for the original Kushaq plateaued relative to new models such as Kylaq and against segment leaders. In some months 2025 registered year-on-year volume declines for Kushaq even as overall brand sales improved.
Internationally, the Kushaq continues to be exported from India into ASEAN and Middle East markets where local assembly is planned in Vietnam, supporting regional growth.
In Europe and other global regions Skoda’s broader lineup remains stronger in core markets than export-oriented models like Kushaq, reflecting regional demand patterns.
The 2026 Skoda Kushaq facelift makes meaningful strides in features and transmission options. Component quality and engineering pedigree align with global Volkswagen Group standards. But its ability to shift market momentum in India depends on further addressing tech expectations and aggressive pricing against segment rivals. Deliveries from March 2026 will test whether this mid-life update is a turning point or a final opportunity.
