A horrific incident at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah, has sent shockwaves through the community after a Muslim mall worker was brutally stabbed multiple times. Authorities allege that the assailant, Peter Michael Larsen, 48, deliberately targeted the victim because of his religion, stating his intent "to kill Muslims."
The victim, identified by friends and local media as Sohail, an Indian mall worker, was reportedly stabbed at least 15 times. According to court documents, Larsen approached Sohail, asked his name and religion, and then requested a bottle of water. As Sohail turned to retrieve it, Larsen allegedly began his unprovoked and violent attack.
Sohail suffered multiple stab wounds across his body and was bleeding heavily when police arrived. Fortunately, brave bystanders intervened, tackling Larsen to the ground and subduing him before officers reached the scene. Larsen was subsequently booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct. Police noted in a booking affidavit that Larsen poses "a substantial danger to the public" due to his "violent actions... ideologies and pre-planned mass casualty events."
Sohail, who works at a mall kiosk, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Friends have highlighted the severe impact this attack has had on him and his family. Luna Nunez, a friend who works nearby, revealed that Sohail does not have insurance, is the sole provider for his family, including two young children and a wife. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support Sohail and his family during this incredibly difficult time, underscoring the community's swift response to the tragedy.
This incident has been widely condemned as a hate crime. "Hate crime, there’s no space for hate," Sohail's manager stated, echoing sentiments from the wider community.
