India has once again asserted its dominance on the cricket field, securing a second consecutive gold medal at the Asian Games 2026. In a high-stakes final, the Indian team defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 19 runs, continuing their impressive head-to-head record against their neighbours.
The final, held on Saturday, October 3, saw explosive performances from young Indian batsmen Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma. Abhishek, the world's No. 1 T20I batter, set the tone with a sensational 61 off just 28 balls, including seven towering sixes. His aggressive batting dismantled Pakistan's bowling attack, particularly in the Powerplay overs, where India amassed 81 runs.
Following Abhishek's fireworks, vice-captain Tilak Varma silenced any critics with a brilliant unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls.
Along with Shivam Dube (27 off 15 balls), Tilak provided the final flourish, adding 62 runs for the sixth wicket in a crucial five-over period. India posted a daunting total of 211 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs, a score that proved to be beyond Pakistan's reach.
Pakistan's chase saw a valiant effort from Hasan Nawaz, who smashed 96 off 51 balls. However, the scoreboard pressure was immense. Despite Nawaz's heroics, India's experienced bowlers, including Washington Sundar (2/29) and Jasprit Bumrah (0/33), maintained their composure, ensuring no late surprises.
Axar Patel also chipped in with two crucial wickets.
This victory not only adds another gold to India's medal tally but also extends their impressive run against Pakistan, making it 6-0 in head-to-head encounters since the start of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The win also provided a much-needed boost for skipper Shreyas Iyer, easing some of the pressure that had mounted after a challenging start to his national captaincy earlier in the year.
The Indian team's exceptional performance underscores their strength and depth in T20 cricket, reaffirming their status as a formidable force on the international stage.
