The UK is currently experiencing a significant heatwave, marking its fifth this year, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels for the season. On Thursday, the nation recorded its hottest day of the year, as the mercury hit a staggering 38.1C (100F) in Kew Gardens. This isn't the first time the UK has touched 38C this year; an earlier peak was observed on June 26 in Lingwood, Norfolk. Notably, this marks only the second instance in a calendar year that such extreme temperatures have been reached twice, a phenomenon last seen in 2022.
In response to the escalating heat, a rare amber extreme heat warning has been issued by the Met Office. This critical alert is in effect across a vast area of the UK, encompassing Eastern England, London and the South-East, the Midlands, North-West England, South-West England, and parts of Yorkshire and Humber, and will remain active until 23:59 BST. Alongside this, the UK Health Security Agency has put out amber heat health alerts for all of England. These alerts highlight the potential for significant impacts on health and social care services, including a projected rise in deaths, particularly among those over 65 or with pre-existing health conditions.
Adding to the challenge, a "tropical night" is anticipated in several areas, where temperatures are not expected to drop below 20C. This is due to increasingly humid air spreading into western regions. The continuous strain of high daytime and nighttime temperatures can place considerable stress on the human body. While temperatures are forecast to gradually decrease by the weekend, they are still expected to remain at or slightly above the average for mid-August.
This heatwave has already seen more temperature records tumble. On Thursday afternoon, several locations recorded temperatures exceeding 37C. This provisional record now marks the highest number of days in a single calendar year where temperatures have reached or surpassed 37C. The nation is urged to take precautions to stay safe during this intense period of heat.
