Thiruvananthapuram local polls: LDF, UDF, BJP eye bigger wins

A day before the declaration of the local body polls results, the three major fronts are optimistic about improving their performance in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The United Democratic Front (UDF), which currently holds 10 of the 100 wards, is pushing to widen its tally this time around. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) appears confident of surpassing the 51 wards it won last time, with leaders indicating 38-40 wards are within reach and another 10-15 where they could win comfortably.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), energized by a decade-long push for power in the Corporation, is banking on its ground-level campaign and inventive strategies, including QR-coded polling slips for voters, to overcome negative perceptions. A recent controversy surrounding a Sathamangalam ward candidate, R. Sreelekha, who shared a fake opinion poll on polling day, has prompted the State Election Commission to take a serious view, potentially posing a challenge for the BJP in that ward.

Rebel candidates have emerged in several seats across the city, adding uncertainty to the race for the major fronts. Alongside this, delimitation has complicated outreach efforts as some families could not be traced, slightly hampering campaigning in certain areas. While no party is clearly in the driver’s seat, the possibility of a hung verdict remains on the table as voters decide who should lead the corporation.

It remains to be seen how much impact these internal dynamics—rebels, the poll-day controversy, and delimitation effects—will have when results are finally announced. The election close to home could hinge on ground-level sentiment and turnout more than slogans, shaping the city’s governance for the next term.
