Huawei Defies U.S. Sanctions with Breakthrough 1.4nm Chip Tech
Huawei unveils a revolutionary way to build advanced 1.4nm chips, potentially bypassing U.S. tech bans and the need for restricted lithography machines.
Chinese tech giant Huawei has announced a major breakthrough in semiconductor manufacturing that could allow it to bypass strict U.S. trade restrictions. During a presentation at the International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) in Shanghai, the head of Huawei’s semiconductor division, He Tingbo, revealed that the company is developing a new path to produce next-generation 1.4-nanometre (1.4nm) chips by 2031.
This development is significant because the United States has blocked Huawei’s access to the most advanced chipmaking equipment since 2019. Specifically, the company has been unable to purchase extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) machines, which are currently considered essential for mass-producing chips at the 5nm level or smaller. By shifting how chipmaking is conceptualized, Huawei suggests it may have found a way to create these tiny, powerful components without needing the restricted Western technology.
The global race for smaller, faster chips is at the heart of the ongoing technological rivalry between the U.S. and China. These cutting-edge semiconductors are crucial for training and powering advanced artificial intelligence systems. While the industry leader, Taiwan’s TSMC, expects to reach the 1.4nm milestone by 2028, Huawei’s roadmap shows it is determined to stay in the game despite the geopolitical hurdles.
He Tingbo noted that the company has faced frequent questions about its survival over the last six years. She explained that the new technique involves a fundamental shift in traditional chipmaking principles, including those governed by Moore's Law—the idea that the number of transistors on a chip doubles roughly every two years. By reimagining these processes, Huawei aims to secure its future in the high-stakes world of AI and high-performance computing.
