JD Wetherspoon, the popular British pub chain, has announced a new policy banning customers from playing music or taking phone calls on speaker within its premises. This move comes after numerous complaints from patrons who were reportedly "driven nuts" by the amplified sounds from smartphones and tablet computers. The ban is now in effect across all 792 Wetherspoon pubs.
The company stated that the issue of noise from personal devices has become an "increasing problem in recent years." To address this, Wetherspoon is asking customers to switch their phones to silent mode or to use earphones when in the pub. This aims to restore a more peaceful atmosphere for all visitors.
Sir Tim Martin, chairman and founder of JD Wetherspoon, emphasized the chain's commitment to creating a serene environment. He remarked, “In a world dominated by other people’s music and amplified sound, Wetherspoon pubs are an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation.” He added that to prevent customers from being "driven chicken jalfrezi by a cacophony of sound," the company is "kindly asking phone users to pipe down."
