Bitchat, a new messaging app developed by Block CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, operates entirely offline and doesn't require a SIM card, Wi-Fi, or mobile data. By connecting adjacent devices via Bluetooth mesh networking, the app enables users to send messages even in the absence of internet connectivity.
Bitchat is presently accessible in beta via Apple TestFlight. Users can use the app without a phone number, email address, or even an account, unlike WhatsApp or Signal. Rather, Bitchat uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to create a secure mesh network that allows encrypted messages to move between devices until they get to the intended recipient. This makes the app helpful in crowded locations with poor network access, remote locations, and emergency scenarios.

What Is Bitchat?
Reports state that Bitchat's primary goal is privacy. End-to-end encryption ensures that messages vanish automatically. Messages are only stored in the user's device memory because there is no central server. Additionally, the app doesn't gather any personal information. According to Dorsey, Bitchat is made for privacy-first communication, which means that it only allows peer-to-peer messaging and has no servers, infrastructure, or data collection.
Along with a "store and forward" model that allows users to receive delayed messages if they are offline, the app also supports password-protected group chats, also known as "rooms." WiFi Direct will be included in future updates to increase range and bandwidth.
