Heartbreaking: 8-Year-Old Louisiana Girl Dies from Rare Brain-Eating Amoeba

An 8-year-old girl in Louisiana, Lillian Smart, has tragically passed away after contracting an extremely rare and often fatal brain-eating amoeba. Her family confirmed that Lillian died over the weekend following a diagnosis of an infection from Naegleria fowleri.

According to her parents, Daniel and Rebecca Smart, who shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, "

Last night Lillian ran from our arms to the arms of Jesus. The injuries to her brain were too severe for her little body to recover from. Everyone did everything they could to keep her here.

"

Health authorities describe Naegleria fowleri as a "brain-eating amoeba" that thrives in warm freshwater bodies. It can enter the body through the nose, travel to the brain, and cause a severe infection known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, which is almost always fatal. The infection cannot spread from person to person.

Lillian likely contracted the amoeba while swimming in Lake Claiborne in north Louisiana, according to the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH). The LDH had announced last week that the state experienced its first confirmed Naegleria fowleri infection since 2013, though they did not identify Lillian Smart due to patient privacy policies.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry expressed his condolences on social media, writing, "Heartbroken over the news of Lillian’s passing." This amoeba is found in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, canals, and ponds, especially when water temperatures consistently exceed 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

Cases of Naegleria fowleri infection are extremely rare.

Between 1937 and 2025, there have been approximately 180 confirmed infections in the U.S., with nearly all proving fatal.

This rarity, however, does not diminish the profound impact and sorrow for families affected by such a devastating loss.
