Sikkim-based rapper Ugen Namgyal Bhutia, widely known as UNB, was reportedly attacked by a group of eight to ten men in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Dibang Valley district. The incident occurred on Monday evening near Tiwari Gaon as he was returning from a performance at a festival in Anini.
Police reports indicate that UNB sustained injuries to his head and face, including swelling around one eye. He has since undergone a medical examination and is reported to be in stable condition. His vehicle was also damaged during the assault.
According to UNB's manager, Deep Dhar, two vehicles allegedly followed their car for approximately an hour before intercepting them while they were traveling towards Roing around 6 PM. Dhar claims that the assailants, whose vehicle number plates were obscured with mud, confirmed UNB's presence in the car before launching their attack with rods.
He further alleged that the attackers specifically targeted UNB and him, leaving other team members unharmed.
The manager stated that the assault took place on a secluded jungle stretch where mobile connectivity was poor and no other vehicles were present. The attackers reportedly fled the scene when a truck approached the area.
Roing police station officer-in-charge Taniya Uli confirmed that police received information about the incident around 7:50 PM, attributing the delay in reporting to the poor mobile network in the area. Police swiftly alerted check gates with descriptions of the suspect vehicles. On Tuesday, officers accompanied the victim to the site to gather evidence.
Uli highlighted that the absence of witnesses and the challenging network conditions in the remote area are complicating the investigation.
An FIR has been registered at Roing police station under sections 126(2), 115(2), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which cover wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt, and basic criminal intimidation.
Authorities are actively working to identify those involved and determine the full circumstances leading to the alleged attack.
UNB gained prominence for his distinctive hip-hop style, building a significant following across Sikkim and the Northeast. He also appeared on MTV Hustle 2.0 in 2022, where his performance of “Hum Bhi Kya Kam Hai”, addressing issues of identity and discrimination faced by people from the Northeast, garnered widespread attention.
UNB, who founded the independent label KAUSO Records in 2017, frequently uses his music as a platform to highlight social issues and represent the Northeast in the broader Indian hip-hop scene.
