Thousands of residents across Kent are facing a miserable start to the summer as a record-breaking May heatwave has triggered a widespread water supply crisis. South East Water has reported that the sudden surge in demand during the scorching weather has left taps dry in some areas and caused low pressure in others, leaving locals frustrated and struggling to cope with the heat.

In Whitstable, the situation reached a critical point on Thursday when storage reservoirs dropped to dangerously low levels, leaving around 8,000 customers completely without supply. Residents have been seen queuing at emergency bottled water stations, expressing their anger at the lack of preparation for the hot spell. One local resident noted that after a particularly wet May, just a few days of sunshine seemed to throw the entire system into chaos, making basic tasks like flushing toilets or doing laundry impossible.

The disruption isn't limited to Whitstable. Approximately 7,000 people in Tankerton, Ashford, and surrounding villages like Cranbrook and Headcorn are experiencing intermittent supply or low water pressure. South East Water has warned that another 7,000 customers remain at risk as they struggle to keep up with the demand. The company has issued an urgent plea to customers to use water only for essential purposes—drinking, cooking, and hygiene—until the situation stabilizes.

While engineers are working to restore full service, the company warned that supplies might remain intermittent throughout the weekend. For many in Kent, the timing couldn't be worse, as the record-breaking temperatures make the lack of running water not just an inconvenience, but a health concern.
