In Kochi, the United Democratic Front faced a bruising test from Congress rebels, but managed to cushion the blow as the tally stopped short of crossing the historic 50-seat mark in the Kochi Corporation.
Rebel-turned Independent candidates contested in at least nine divisions, and the Left Democratic Front quickly seized the opportunity to frame the results as a meaningful setback for the UDF’s main rival. The battle underscored a fragmented voter landscape where margins often decided the fate of individual seats rather than a sweeping verdict.
In a string of notable outcomes, VK Minimol in Palarivattom, PD Martin in Girinagar, and Xavier P Antony in Poonithura survived the challenge posed by Joseph Alex, Malini Kurup, and Hareesh Kumar respectively, underscoring the staying power of some rebel-backed candidates within the UDF fold. Minimol’s victory margin stood at 856 votes, higher than the 462 votes secured by Alex in a closely watched contest.
In the Chullickal division, Bastin Babu, an Independent, emerged victorious with a margin of 618 votes, defeating Congress candidate Sebastian Antony. Across other hot seats, Congress candidate Shaila Thadhevoose was edged out by CPI(M) candidate Joseph Fernandes by 276 votes, with Independent candidate K.G. Antony drawing 361 votes, a factor analysts cited as contributing to the swing against the Congress flag in that seat.
In Mundamveli East, the LDF-backed K.J. Prakashan scraped through with a narrow margin, illustrating the stubborn resistance of the opposition in pockets of the city. The broader takeaway from Kochi’s results is a complicated picture: the UDF held its ground in many contests, but rebels and independents chipped away at the majority, preventing a clean sweep for any single party.
Overall, the results signal a nuanced mandate for Kochi’s local governance, with the UDF maintaining a foothold while facing a reshaped opposition that can influence council dynamics for the coming term.
